Mitä teet
If you want to experience DC beyond the usual tourist sites, and come away with a deeper understanding of inequality, this tour is for you. This two-hour walking tour takes you to significant sites in historic Anacostia, a rapidly changing African-American community in southeast DC’s Ward 8 to explore the community’s history, and the city’s evolving story of segregation and gentrification. All along the tour, I will offer insights from social science on inequality as well as poignant stories from my own life and work with lower-income families and children in Ward 8.
Price per person for 2-hour tour: 1 person: $120 / 2 people: $60 / 3 people: $40 / 4 people: $30 / 5+ people: $24.
I'll meet you at the Anacostia Metro Station, and we'll walk from there to a scenic overlook up Morris Road, the historic Frederick Douglass House, the Anacostia Arts Center, the 11th Street Bridge, and the iconic Big Chair.
Other things to note
If it's raining or drizzling the tour will be cancelled, and you will be reimbursed.
Proceeds help support my volunteer nonprofit work in family diplomacy and international mentoring that helps to open the world to lower-income families and children in DC and abroad (more at learninglife.info)

I'm a former sociology professor turned nonprofit director developing programs in family diplomacy and international mentoring (details at learninglife.info). I've wrestled with issues of inequality, culture and power for 20+ years as an academic, activist and nonprofit director. As an aside, the tour is generally in English, but I'm a French-American dual national with Hispanic origins, and speak French and Spanish at advanced levels, so I am happy to talk some of the time in those languages, and include cross-national cultural differences in our tour conversation.

My husband and I enjoyed our tour of Anacostia with Paul, who used to live in the neighborhood. He and his girlfriend Kelly were friendly and made us feel welcome. We discussed a number of topics related to the people, the history, and the changes in the community. I recommend this tour, which is fast-paced and covers a lot of ground, for anyone who wants to stray from the typical "shiny" commercialized tourist sites.
