From the other reviews, I gather that Carlos in general is a reliable host and his properties are nice. Unfortunately, I had a bad experience with the property in Atacames and communication with Carlos. I contacted him the morning of our arrival in Atacames to ask when we could check in. He told me 8am. He sent me a location of the listing on (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) but didn't provide any more information (he does not live in Atacames). At 8, he did not respond to me. At 11, he finally responded saying he was in a meeting and that the normal check in time for any place is 12, implying I was pestering him. If he had told me that the check in time was 12 from the beginning, I would have had no problem. We went to the location he sent and waited, with no one coming to get us and no idea which building was the his. He texted me that he would have someone call me. I asked for the number so I could call them (they weren't calling me), which he did not give me. When they finally called me at 12:30, the hotel attendants said they had seen us outside but didn't know we were the tenants.
The room itself was fine, but the listing was actually for more than room. We didn't understand we were essentially staying in a small hotel. The pictures in the listing implied multiple rooms (they were just pics of other hotel rooms, some bigger than others). I asked him if we could check out early to check in somewhere more in line with what we were looking for. He basically said no, and that he has never had so many problems with a guest.
Perhaps worst was the LOUD (like, club speaker in our room loud) music playing directly in our window at 2am, 4:30 am, 7 am... I imagine this is more of a problem during Carnaval, which is when we stayed. Also, it's not really the fault of the owners of the hotel, but I believe some rowdy people happen to live across the street. The music made it impossible to sleep much of the night. They also rented out the space in front of the hotel as a parking lot and a lot of cars had their alarms go off.
I believe during non-holidays, all the rooms are available to renters. In that case, the place would be a good deal. The beach is really close, and it's far enough that the music from the beach is not so bothersome. Two cute puppies lived there too.
