Guest Room 2 is a bright and spacious bedroom, located on the third floor, with beautiful views of the side lawn and the gallops at the front of the house, where the race horses work in the mornings. It has a superking sized bed (6ft), plus the option of a comfortable foldable small double bed (4ft), and has an ensuite bathroom with a shower. It has period furnishing in keeping with the house and is one of four available guest rooms.

This is an old estate house, originally built in the 1600's and redesigned in the 1800's, supposedly by the same architect as America's White House . It was completely refurbished by its current owners in 2008. It is an old walled estate, situated on 114 acres, with 55 stables and 2 gallops. It consists of 3 floors, 8 ensuite bedrooms, four reception rooms, a large country style kitchen and a working national hunt yard. It is located on the outskirts of Rathkeale town and is a 10 minute drive to the pretty village of Adare and a 20 minute drive to Limerick city. Both Shannon and Kerry Airports are a 45 minute drive, and the car ferry at Tarbert (Co. Kerry) , which crosses on a half hourly basis to Co. Clare - home of Irish traditional music, the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren is only 30 minutes away. It is also part of the route of the beautiful Wild Atlantic Way.

The stable yard is directly outside the back door of the house, and horses will be out of their stables for most of the morning. In addition to the horses, there are four quiet and friendly dogs. This is a peaceful, relaxing and private place that is a comfortable family home, with plenty outside space for exploring. It is a five minute walk from the town of Rathkeale.

The towns of Adare, Askeaton and Newcastle West border Rathkeale.

Adare is renowned as one of Ireland's prettiest villages. The main street combines typical Irish architecture with the English styled buildings and infrastructure, purpose-built for the Dunraven estate. It is a tourist destination and is also a very popular choice of wedding venue. It has many boutiques, pubs with Irish traditional music, hotels and a local heritage centre, which gives insight into the history of the village.
There are two 18-hole golf courses - Adare Golf Club, home of the 2007 & 2008 Irish Open and Adare Manor Golf Club. There is also a popular pitch and putt course in the town and Clonshire Equestrian Centre which is a five minute drive from this location.

Askeaton is a small town located on the River Deel, with a Desmond Castle dating from 1199 and a Franciscan Abbey dating from 1389. Located within the grounds of the castle is the Halla Mor (the Great Hall), one of the finest examples of its kind in Ireland. Also on the grounds is the Hellfire Club, an almost intact redbrick building built in 1740 (the same year the monks abandoned the nearby friary). It is one of two in Ireland. The Hellfire Clubs, throughout Ireland and Britain, were 18th-century clubs where rich men gathered to drink, gamble and have orgies. Visits by the devil and human sacrifice are part of the lore surrounding the goings on in Hellfire Clubs!
Modern day offerings in Askeaton include a fine leisure centre, including a 25 metre swimming pool, a learner pool, sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi hot tub and gym, with special facilities for disability - see (URL HIDDEN)

Newcastlewest is the largest town in Co. Limerick. It is a busy town with many boutiques, shops, restaurants and pubs. It is on the route from Rathkeale to Kerry and is the birth place of "Munster's de facto poet laureate", Michael Hartnett (Irish: Mícheál Ó hAirtnéide) (18 September 1941 – 13 October 1999), in whose honour Éigse Michael Hartnett (a literary and arts festival) is held annually (in April).

On the outskirts of Rathkeale town is the 15th-century tower house of Castle Matrix. The castle was built as a fortress during the early 1400s by Thomas FitzGerald, 7th Earl of Desmond, and was later the home of Maurice FitzGerald, 9th Earl of Desmond. It contains a display of art objects and holds historical records and is one of a series of significant Desmond properties in County Limerick, as is the nearby towns of Adare, Askeaton and Newcastle West.

In the cemetery of Holy Trinity Church are many gravestones bearing names of Irish Palatine families. These families came from Rheinland-Pfalz, the Rhineland Palatinate in Germany as refugees in 1709. Many of their descendants now live in North America, though the region around Castle Matrix in the villages of Killeheen, Ballingrane, and Courtmatrix contains the largest concentration of Palatine descendants in Ireland.
Rathkeale's former railway station on the closed North Kerry railway line from Limerick to Tralee has been converted into the Irish Palatine Museum - (URL HIDDEN)

Sean (Jackie) Finn, Brigadier of the 4th (Rathkeale) West Limerick Battalion of the IRA during the Irish War of Independence was a native of Rathkeale. His grave in the local graveyard features an impressive Celtic cross.

As our children leave home and the surrounds become more silent, it feels like the right time to invite people into our home. While only doing Airbnb a short time, it has been a fabulous experience, full of conversation and fun, and everyone we've met to date, has been really lovely.
