Red Goat Retreat is a cute, art-filled, 840 square foot stucco house surrounded by cattle pastures, but only a 20-minute drive to the Austin airport, Circuit of the Americas and the historic town of Bastrop. Downtown Austin is an easy 40-minute drive away. Whether you're traveling for business or pleasure we hope you will find the retreat a welcome and comfortable place to stay.

Old Persian rugs, simple furniture, original art and quirky details create a cowboy-bohemian vibe in the Red Goat Retreat house. I have tried to create a peaceful, but visually stimulating place, where you can relax and connect with nature and your fellow travelers.
The house has two bedrooms, one full bath and a half bath. The living room, dining room and kitchen are one big room and take up the front half of the house.
There is a Roku TV in the living room with basic cable service and a few subscriptions. The futon sofa folds down to make a full-sized bed. It's surprisingly comfortable.
The dining room table seats six. A very popular bird feeder is a few feet from the window. Close by is a bird book and a selection of other books and board games. .
The kitchen features rustic cabinetry and granite countertops. There’s a refrigerator/freezer and a good microwave. The coffeemaker will make a quick, single cup or a big pot suitable for a crowd. I will provide freshly ground coffee and decaf. A counter top toaster/oven is large enough to bake a medium pizza. There is a new, two-burner hot plate, and you will find an electric skillet, a large roaster and a basic compliment of pots and pans under the counter. There are plenty of dishes, flatware, wine and water glasses, and mugs. In the pantry you will find some cooking basics and a selection of tea and cocoa.
Off the kitchen is a tiny bedroom with an antique single bed and dresser. Another single bed can be pulled out from under it, so the little bedroom can sleep two people. There is a half bath attached to this room and curtained off from it.
There is a screened porch that runs along the side of the house and is accessed from the kitchen door. The big porch has lots of potential, but that potential has not been realized.
The larger bedroom is accessed through a hall off the living room. This bedroom is furnished with a queen bed, and an antique table and dresser. At the end of the bed is Sandy Lowder’s beautiful oil painting, Horse and Rider. The full bath with a sink, toilet, shower and closet is accessed through this bedroom. The big window looks out on a mature pomegranate tree.
Outside you will find beds filled with flowers herbs, and a few vegetables There are several sitting areas in the big yard. Be sure to try the handmade cedar swing or play corn hole. There's a Weber grill and a fire circle Small fires may be lit on windless days when there is not a burn ban in our area. Wood and charcoal and lighter is provided. Picnics are fun and there’s a table for that. Add a festive touch with a Mexican oilcloth, stored in the pantry.
On the far side of the long, two-thirds acre is my home, a 1973 Airstream trailer. A newly built, metal building defines the end of your yard. It now houses laundry facilities and storage, but will eventually be my art studio.

Guests have access to the living area of the house and the yard around the house. This includes a small fenced space behind the house, a parking area, fire ring, picnic table and several outside seating areas. There is a screened porch off the kitchen. Guests are welcome to hang out on the porch, but it's not cute.
The Retreat is on two-thirds acre. The Retreat house is on one end of the long lot. I live in a vintage Airstream trailer on the opposite end. In between the guest house and my aluminum home is a metal building that will eventually be my art studio and now serves as a storage and laundry facility. It is still under construction but you will not see or hear any loud building activity during your stay.

What's with the goats, you say? While there are no actual goats at the Retreat, there are lots of goats in my past and a pretty good collection of folk-art goats on display. From the late 1970s til the early 2000s I raised registered Nubian and Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats. I milked every day, twice a day, and went to shows across the Southwest. Later I became a judge and a judge's trainer and published the Nigerian Dwarf goat magazine, Ruminations. The Goodwood herd produced the first Permanent Champions and earned honors for milk production. In the mid 1990s I acquired a buck named Kingwood, who was distinctively, bright red. Soon the Goodwood herd became known for it's beautiful red goats....and decades later they inspired the name of my late-life enterprise.

Red Goat Retreat is in a rural neighborhood. The road is quite busy but you won't hear any traffic noise inside the house. About a quarter mile down the road is an entrance to McKinney Roughs Natural Area, with miles of beautiful walking and equestrian trails along the Colorado River. The cottage is very close to the Lost Pines Hyatt Resort and Spa. Many guests have found Red Goat Retreat to be a convenient and economical place to stay when attending events and meetings at the resort.
