Airy, bright, comfortable space with an open plan living area warmed by a wood-fired cookstove (a 4 burner gas range with oven for cooking is also available, and generally preferred for summer cooking). Large windows with antique glass offer beautiful views of meadows and ocean. Doors open on two wood decks. (Note: travel to Swans Island requires a 30-minute ferry ride leaving from Bass Harbor, Maine. Maine State Ferry Service operates the ferry and makes 5-6 round trips per day.)

This classic Maine summer home is located steps from a sandy beach in a quiet cove, perfect for swimming and for young children. Grassy meadows surround the house, which has views of the ocean on three sides. The kitchen/dining/living area is comfortable and light. A wood stove can warm the house on cool evenings and in colder months. In the summer, doors open to a wrap-around porch with built in benches. The first-floor corner bedroom has a double bed and views of the ocean on two sides. Another bedroom has a separate entrance onto the porch and is separated from the main house by the entryway. Upstairs two bedrooms sleep two each. The second floor front bedroom offers views of the ocean and surrounding island. 25 acres of meadow, woods, a small pond, and pink granite shorefront invite leisurely hikes and nature exploration.

A small grocery store is a ten-minute walk away. Free wireless service is available at the Swans Island Library, a fifteen-minute drive from the house. The Island’s much-loved Fine Sand Beach is a short distance away.

The island features sandy beaches, coves with smooth stones, spectacular hikes, fishing, and swimming in a fresh water quarry. During summer months the town offers frequent “Town Breakfasts,” concerts, and other community events.

Another lovely house shares the property. Perfect to rent separately or jointly for larger groups: search for Cove-Side Meadow House on this site.

Travel to the Shore House and to Swans Island requires a 30-minute ferry ride leaving from Bass Harbor, Maine. Maine State Ferry Service operates the ferry and makes 5-6 round trips per day. Advance reservations are strongly recommended and can be made by calling the Bass Harbor and Swans Island terminals. (Without a reservation we recommend arriving at the terminal at least two hours before the boat is scheduled to depart. And note: even with a reservation you must arrive 15 minutes prior to departure time or your reservation will be forfeited.)

The general store on the island is remarkably well-stocked for a small outfit. The owners, Brian and Kathy, make sure to maintain a large selection of high-quality meats, lobsters and a limited amount of fresh fish, a small but decent variety of fresh vegetables, cheese, bread, and plenty of snacks and basic necessities. In summer there are island eggs, and local produce. They will also special-order for you from off-island and are usually able to have what you need by the next day. Fresh island produce is available at a local farm, and you can buy lobster fresh off the boat at the fisherman’s coop or at “Kent’s Wharf” in Swans Island village. NOTE: There is no alcohol for sale anywhere, and the store cannot order it for you so you must BYOB. Hannaford grocery store in Ellsworth carries alcohol; wine and beer are available at Sawyers Market in Southwest Harbor on MDI (buy these provisions before arriving on the island as going off island is a whole-day affair).

The store also runs a busy take-out (and picnic table area) with all the classic Maine summer food, from lobster and fried clams, to hot-dogs and French fries.

Professor of art history at Wesleyan University My siblings and I have been spending summers on Swans Island since we were kids (early 70s for some of us). Our parents, John and Carolyn Grace, bought and refurbished the Shore House in the early 80s, and founded a cottage industry on the property in the mid-90s making handwoven wool blankets (Swans Island Blankets, now run out of Northport ME). Through the mid 2000s, they lived on the island year-round and ran the business from the Meadow House. We all continue to love and cherish the two houses and their surrounding fields, woods, and coves, as well as the island community, its rugged coastline, granite ledges, blackberries, and spruce forests.
