Attiki, Kreikka

Beach info/Schinias National Park:
The area has been designated a National park, part of the 2000 Natura Network, comprising a wetland, the famous coastal pine forest, a freshwater spring, a peninsula, a hill and the magnificent bay, and is the most important coastal ecosystem of Attica. The Park also includes the Olympic Rowing & Canoeing Centre.

History/Cultural Info:
The name Marathon comes from the legend of Pheidippides, the Greek messenger. The legend states that he was sent from the battlefield to Athens to announce that the Persians had been defeated in the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. It is said that he ran the entire distance without stopping and burst into the assembly, exclaiming νενικήκαμεν (nenikēkamen, "we have won!"), before collapsing and dying.

Nearby Towns:

Nea Makri: situated 8km south of Marathon and 25km NE of Athens city centre it has a port and a beach. It was founded in 1924, when its first inhabitants arrived, refugees from the coasts of Lycia, Asia Minor, from the Ionian towns of Makris and Livissi.

Rafina (10km distance from Nea Makri):
It is a port from where ferries go to the Cyclades and Evia islands, especially crowded during the summer months, but it is just like being on an island. It is the closest port to the Athens International Airport (30min drive). Rafina also has a long sandy beach, that is usually only crowded on Sunday.

Marathon town:
Marathon is a town of northeastern Attica and seat of the municipality of the same name. It is one of the most historic municipalities in Greece worldwide. It was named after the local hero Marathos.

Museums and nearby sites:

Marathon Archaeological Museum:
The permanent exhibition of the Archaeological Museum of Marathon presents the history of the area, from the prehistoric times to the Roman period through the findings of the excavations of the wider Marathon region, including findings originating from the Battle of Marathon and the Egyptian Temple built nearby.

Marathon Battlefield and Burial Mound:
A 10m-high tumulus, or burial mound, sits 4km south of the town of Marathon, just east of the Athens–Marathon road. The site has a model of the battle as well as historical information.

Marathon Run Museum: The permanent exhibition of the “Olympic Marathon” presents for the first time in public the history of the Olympic Marathons from 1896 to 2000. If you are interested in learning more or even participating in the game, you can visit the official website of the Athens Classic Marathon.

St. Ephraim Monastery (Nea Makri): is one of the oldest monasteries of Athens, where many massacres took place during the years of the Turkish domination; one of the martyrs being Saint Ephraim.

Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods:
The excavations have revealed the extensive complex of the Egyptian Gods sanctuary, as well as a luxurious bathhouse (balneum).

Archaeological Site of Ramnous:
Excavations have brought to light the sanctuary of Nemesis - the most important temple of that divinity in ancient Greece.

Marathon Lake (or Marathon Reservoir) and Dam:
The spectacular marble dam was constructed to cover the growing needs of the capital for water after the vast immigration wave that followed the Asia Minor War (1919-1922). It was built with high-quality Pentelic marble, the same marble that was used to build the Parthenon, and it is the only marble dam in the world.

Nearby beaches/day excursions:
There are plenty of beaches beyond Schinias as you work your way north up the coast and the further you get the more it will seem like a Greek island to you. There is a small cove and a beach at Agia Marina near Ancient Ramnous, where you can even take the small ferry to Styrra and Almyropotamos in Evia island.
There are also two unspoiled beaches with crystal clear blue waters, located outside the village of Sessi, in Grammatiko area, 22km from Marathon village, that can be reached from the Grammatiko dirt road.
