Ms Li’s critique is not at all reflective of the quality of the Host’s property as confirmed by the reviews of other guests.
When Ms Li’s group arrived she asked the Host to cook and clean the 4 live crabs which they had illegally imported on the ferry from Canada. At first the Host was shocked at this inappropriate request but Iron Chef Rick re-grouped quickly and offered to cook a complete meal including their crabs as the ‘secret’ ingredient if they would allow him to dine with them. Iron Chef was both interested in sharing his cooking skills and learning about his guests’ lives in China but Ms Li’s group declined the offer because they did not want their Host dining with them. On that basis Iron Chef could not find a big enough pot in which to cook their crabs and as an alternative suggested they try a local restaurant which did cook them.
Basement? Yes the suite is in the “basement” in Ms Li’s terms; however it is a ‘daylight’ basement with numerous windows providing ocean views and which open for ventilation and freshening as guests require. The fact that the suite is on the lower floor is clearly stated in the property description.
Air quality. No one other than Ms Li has ever complained about the air quality, however, all she had to do was open up the windows in the bedrooms, living room and dining nook as required. The outside air in Port Angeles is the finest in the world, a mix of mountain and sea air without a molecule of pollution. Also, there is a can of air freshener and a strong ventilation fan in the bath room to vent out any smells generated by the guests using that space.
Uncomfortable? Ms Li says that they found Rick’s Place was not comfortable. In contrast so many other guests have commented that they especially appreciated the comfort and warmth of the place, especially the warmth and ambiance of the gas fireplace after a hard drive or a day of hiking in the Park; why Ms Li and her group did not find this also the case is impossible to imagine. There are heaters in each bedroom which along with the gas fireplace are adjustable to personal comfort levels and capable of warming even the most cold blooded guest.
Old furniture? Most furniture has been recently purchased new from Ikea or other furniture suppliers however there is a highly sought after Mid-Century Modern Ethan Allen Collection, pieces of which are in the bedrooms along with an Armoire in the living room; these are old but they are very well-made good-old. A very expensive modern leather Euro-style sofa, fancy new computer work station/armoire and contemporary chairs are in the living room. There is no secret about what the furniture looks like at Rick’s Place; it is all pictured in the description of the property on AirBnB. Take a look for yourself to see if the furniture looks too old and uncomfortable and if so please book elsewhere but know that if you do that you will miss out on one of the nicest places in the area, and definitely best located for the Park and City.
“No kitchen to cook.” This is a very unfair complaint since the Host makes it clear in the property description that there is no cooking range and that any cooking must be done with the micro-wave, toaster and hot water from the tea kettle. Also the fact that there is no dish sink is made clear in the word description. The Host’s experience has shown that the type of guest who book Rick’s Place are people who are basing there for touring the area and hiking Olympic Park so they not only don’t want to cook after a long tiring day trying to fit in as much ‘experience’ as possible, they don’t want to have to wash dishes afterwards and thus they are delighted and grateful when their host washes them for them on a daily basis.
Ms Li rated cleanliness 3-stars. Her rating is completely a-typical compared to all the other reviews which the Host urges prospective guests to read and compare. Rick’s Place has always received exceptionally high marks and written accolades for cleanliness. Cleanliness is a priority with Rick. Having been unable to find people capable of cleaning to his exceptionally high standards he decided to do it himself and for this reason he knows exactly how much work goes in to cleaning after each check-out and that the place is spotless each and every time for the next guests. The only time it was not clean during Ms Li’s stay was immediately after Ms Li’s group got done cracking and eating their crabs which created by far the worst mess and stink ever created by a guest at Rick’s Place.
Ms Li’s group had no respect for American wildlife laws which prohibit the importation of live crabs which to the Host who treasures wildlife and respects the laws pertaining to them was a clear indication of the lack of high character and ethical standards of Ms Li and her group. Rick’s Place was spotlessly clean when Ms Li arrived and a messy disaster after she checked out with bits of crab and shells all over the dining nook, under chairs and behind doors, not to mention the wine spilled but not mopped up. Ms Li’s complaints are not at all typical of evaluations made by other guests; her complaints can and should be evaluated and then dismissed by reading the ratings and glowing word reports from all the other guests who have had wonderful stays hosted by Rick at Rick’s Place.
