Tin Can Bay, Queensland, Australia

You wont have to drive anywhere if you don’t want to – IGA is just a hop skip and a jump up the road (150m) and is open from 6am til 7pm every day of the week. Walk a little further on from IGA and you’ll find the Town Centre with a delicious bakery, pizza shop, fish n chips, fresh local seafood, pharmacy, bank, newsagent, gift store, hairdresser and the fabulous local butcher shop.

Take a stroll northwards along the esplanade and you’ll discover cafes, tackle shops, service station, restaurants, the Snack Shack ( simply the best local seafood cooked to perfection every night of the week ! - choose local fillets of freshly caught reef fish, freshly shucked oysters and prawn cutlets so good you will double your order the following night ) . The Sleepy Lagoon Hotel & Thirsty Camel Bottle Shop is an easy 600m walk up the road and serves up cracking pub fare, pizzas and cold beverages lunch and dinner. Lees Fishing Company is open daily 8am – 4.30pm with a magnificent offering of freshly caught local prawns, bugs, reef fish, crabs, oysters, scallops, squid and also has a freezer full of quality bait, whole mullet and crab pot frame packs. Then there’s the Yacht Club for absolute waterfront dining, the Marina Bar & Grill, Temptations by the Water, Alistans by the Bay, Tasty’s at Tin Can Bay or catch the free courtesy bus to the Tin Can Bay Country Club for delicious Chinese cuisine. Another must do is to call in to the Tin Can Bay RSL for a coldie on Sunday for their weekly BBQ lunch & raffles – its an easy 600m walk up the road from Watoomba House.

No trip to Tin Can Bay is complete without enjoying a morning coffee at barnacles café overlooking Schnapper Creek after hand feeding the wild Australian humpback dolphins that have been visiting the area since 1950, this is such a memorable experience for both young and old guaranteed to leave a lasting impression on the many whom are lucky to take part in this daily occurrence. If you are keen to get out on the sparkling waters of the Bay and don’t have your own boat – don’t despair just hire one from Tin Can Bay Boat Hire – with plenty of local fishing tips to share they have several vessels for you to choose from and can get you safely out on the water in no time. They can even provide bait and tackle - and of course give a full safety briefing prior to your departure.

When you feel like getting outta town for the day and exploring nearby areas, you are most certainly spoilt for choice with many incredibly diverse and pristine natural environments to discover. Number one on the list is world heritage listed Fraser Island - KGari - the world’s largest sand island and you can make an adventurous day trip or much longer if you have time. Being 123km long and 166,038 hectares in size , the island has so many incredible places to see, even a week isn’t long enough ! Travel in your own 4wd, hire one or jump on a fully guided day tour from Rainbow Beach and experience this natural wonder right on your doorstep. An area of remarkable beauty, K’gari has many sites with archaeological remains recording thousands of years of culture and traditions providing important links to the Butchulla people’s past. If you are keen to visit Fraser under your own steam please let us know and we can provide you with loads of handy local information that will make your trip both safe and comfortable in the time you have to spare. As the saying goes time and tide wait for no man so it’s a good idea to plan your Fraser adventure based around tide times, the current beach conditions and your “must see” list once you land on beautiful K'gari.

Rainbow Beach offers many fun experiences for the whole family, from climbing Carlo Sand Blow to take in the incredible views northward to Fraser Island, the stunning coloured sand cliffs and southbound to Double Island Point where its 4wd access only via the beach at low tide or the inland freshwater track. Once you get to Double Island walk to the Light House for panoramic views, spot whales ( seasonally ) during their migratory journey, see bottle nose dolphin pods, majestic Manta Rays and many species of turtles. If you don’t have your own kayaks make sure you book yourself on the Epic Ocean Adventure Dolphin View Kayak Tours departing from Rainbow Beach – you’ll get up close and personal with the friendly local dolphins, or pack your SUP or surf board and ride Australia’ s longest wave ( when conditions are right this break runs for over a kilometre !! ) – perfect for anyone learning to surf.
Double Island is a stunning natural location, unspoilt and completely removed from the busier beach areas, with Honeymoon Bay offering an ever changing landscape of shifting sands and crystal clear turquoise water, you won’t want to pack up and leave ! Check tide times for safe beach access to DI as the infamous Mudlo Rocks have claimed many 4wd’s over the years – you don’t want to get your photo taken and placed on the wall of shame at the pub ! QPWS permits apply so jump on the Government website and get your permit before heading onto the beach. Also whilst in the Gympie region take the Valley Rattler Steam Train & Railmotor Tour departing from the Mary Valley Heritage Railway through the Scenic Mary Valley.
