Why not have a relaxing holiday in this beautiful sympathetically restored Traditional Thatch Cottage, dating back to around the 16th/17th Century making the central rooms of the cottage as much as 400 years old!
Great care has been taken to keep the character of the cottage. The thick stone and mud walls are wonderfully uneven with little nooks and crannys for books and lanterns. Two lower than average doors (leading off the oldest room in the house) still hang on their original hinges. The sash windows with their deep window cills, flagstone floors, the old hobs by the fire with rare wattle and daub hood, together with the original oak beams, complete the picture. The cottage is set in totally private grounds, at the end of a private country lane about 3 miles outside the small market town of Mountrath.
This cottage really has the WOW factor.
The accommodation offers, 2 double bedrooms, 1 with original oak beams, bathroom with shower over bath bath, character living room with original oak beams and fireplace with turf burning stove, kitchen/diner with all mod cons ie. dish washer. electric ovens/gas hobs, microwave & fridge/freezer. Utility room with washing machine. Oil fired heating through out. However you will need to light the stove in the living room in the evenings during the colder months of the year. With the very high ceiling in this room that extra bit of heat is sometimes needed to keep everything cosy (especially if you are coming from a warmer climate than ours!) The cottage also offers FREE WIFI.
Lovely rural location, nearest town with mini supermarkets, butcher, shops, take aways, postoffice = 3 miles.
County town with bars, restaurants, supermarkets, shops, banks = 7 miles.
Nearest motorway junction 7 miles.
Nearest railway station 7 miles.
Although the cottage location is rural and private it is not isolated. It's in the heart of a traditional farming community with the family farm just a short distance away.
Just 15min drive from the lovely Slieve Bloom mountains with popular outdoor activities: walking, horse riding, fishing & golf. Or just take a picnic and relax by a mountain stream.
About 1 hours drive from Dublin airport.
The cottage has been built on a southfacing slope which means there are some steps both inside and out which may present a challange for people with limited mobility.
Not suitable for children.
Sorry no pets.

The cottage is normally let as a 2 bedroom accommodation suitable for up to 4 people. However the cottage can take a maximum of 7 people as this year we have introduced a new Attic Twin/Family room with en-suite bathroom. This additional room has a double bed and a single bed so can be used as a twin/double for family room. This room is extra and is available upon request when making your booking, it costs only €15 per night for 1 - 5 night stays, 6 night stay and weekly cost are only €85. Please note, as the room is in the Attic space it has restricted headroom in places which is all part of the charm of the cottage.
There is a security deposit of €150 for the property.

Laois, County Laois, Irlanti

The cottage is located in a rural townland in the lovely Irish countryside. It's a traditional farming community so watch out for the tractors during summer months. The tractor drivers are usually very helpful and will pull into the nearest gateway to let you pass. The cottage is mostly surrounded by woods down a private driveway, there is one other family living on the same lane. The cottage is a the bottom of the lane so there is no passing traffic. You will have unenviable privacy! Just you and the wildlife. I grew up in this area so I know most of the neighbours in the area and the local people are very friendly but will respect your privacy. The local town Mountrath has everything you might need from food, to petrol, to banking, to kindling and fuel for the fire. It's a functional market town. Abbeyleix is the next nearest town which is a Heritage town, which means it has a more historic feel with many nicely maintained traditional shopfronts and pubs and some lovely coffee shops. The best restaurant for miles around is located here (Mc Evoys). The Slieve Bloom mountains (not very high but we are very proud of them all the same) has some lovely walks, many looped walks and great views in every direction. A new mountain bike trail has recently been opened now too! Co Laois is a very central location in the Republic of Ireland so if travelling further afield is on your to do list, then the cottage is ideally located for daily excursions to many of the main tourist attractions. Previous guests have been to kiss the Blarney stone (Co Cork), see the Cliffs of Mohar and the Burren (Co. Clare), visit Dublin's fair city, visit Glendalough Monastic site (Co. Wicklow) and at a stretch been to see the Giants Causeway in Co. Antrim during their visit. It's a little oasis in the heart of Ireland.

Hi my name is Dee and I am listing this lovely 'Thatch Cottage' located in Ireland. I love travel, meeting new people, hill walking, crafts, art, gardening, floppy eared rabbits and dogs (not necessarily in that order) but what I love most of all is to renovate (Website hidden by Airbnb) particular old buildings. My thatch cottage -which in its former life was a busy farmhouse- turned out to be a real labour of love. I had to rescue it from becoming a ruin....and it took nearly 4 years, on and off, to get the cottage & the garden to the condition you see in the photos today. After all the toil and trouble, I now love to sit in the living room (which was the old farmhouse kitchen) on a chilly evening with my feet up in front of the turf fire gazing up at the bog oak beams wondering what life was like for the person who carved them 400 years ago....and wonder about his decendants who can't have been very tall, because the door leading off to the bedrooms is only a little over 5 foot high! So do come and enjoy a holiday in my lovely cottage and have a fantastic time exploring Ireland. In case you are interested in a little bit of architectural history of the cottage.......... The central room and the little bedroom next door once formed what was probably a barn dwelling, people living at one end (the fireplace end) and animals kept in the other end. The fireplace design is typical of cottage fireplaces from around 1600. Sometime in the 17th century or early part of the 18th this room was divided into a seperate bedroom and living area and a barn built for the animals outside. The design of the little door and its hinges are typical of this period in history. Next to be added was probably the dining end of the kitchen, maybe as a barn and then knocked through to form extra living space. I found a evidence of a large door opening (where the French doors are now) which had been filled in to accommodate a window in the wall. The end of the kitchen which houses the dresser was added next, with the twin room and dairy room/bathroom being added last. These last two areas were originally built as outhouses and are built in stone whereas the rest of the house is built with mud. The twin room was the stable and was knocked through to form a bedroom in the 1950's. I knocked through into the dairy room/bathroom end of the house in 2008. So the cottage has evolved over many hundreds of years which leaves us with a variety of different doors, windows, ceilings, alcoves and fireplaces throughout, giving each room its own character and its place in history. It really is a unique place. I just love it and I hope everyone who comes to stay will to. Unfortunately for me, my work takes me away from home a lot, so I thought rather than leave the house empty it would be a great idea to let people come and stay and enjoy a holiday in Ireland in a truely authentic Irish cottage! If I ever win the lottery my dream would be to rescue other unloved neglected little cottages down forgotten lanes all over Ireland and turn them into great places for people to stay!
