Do not use the wood burning stove in the basement, for safety and liability reasons. Be careful with the firepit not to make the fire too large, and if it is very dry, not to make a fire outside at all. In the living room, there is a gas stove that will create the desired atmosphere, with a visible flame. It is also quite effective at heating the upper part of the house. Just use the thermostats in the family room and the hallway of the main level to keep the house heated to your comfort level.
I have spent my career in the field of education, from teaching to being head of an independent boarding school, to major gift fundraising at the university level. I love Maine and have settled here permanently! You will love it too.
