This original stone hotel dates back to the 1860s; it's unrenovated, full of character and charm, with vintage crockery, a wood heater and a fenced 1/2 acre yard. In a peaceful area, it's a perfect getaway from the rat race. Dogs OK with permission.
This is a one-off, very special place. Dating back to 1864 and constructed of beautiful local stone, it's not at all modernised.
There are two double bedrooms, both with slat-style beds, and a foldout couch in the living room. Also a single bed/daybed in main bedroom & portacot available. The house is often used by writers and other creative types.
We have lots of books to read, records to play, and there's a hammock you can sling under the back verandah.
The garden area is not landscaped; it's a mix of open grass, native trees, a slightly neglected vegie garden and a number of pretty fruit trees.
Come here to relax, sleep, sit in front of the fire; if you must go out, it's a ten minute drive to Castlemaine and twenty minutes to Daylesford, both of which have great markets, shops, restaurants and cultural events.
It's priced to reflect its unrenovated condition and the need for you to be fairly self-sufficient; this is a house where you can unwind and be at peace.
Access to the whole property, including half an acre of fenced land.

We don't live nearby but are usually available to advise by phone. We provide full written instructions on how to "drive" the house before you go and urge you to read that carefully in advance. There are various local guides and maps at the house. Checkin is via a keysafe.

This is a private weekender as well as being available to rent; sometimes we and/or friends are there but it's not shown on the calendar, so we do require contact before booking - a little notice is great.
We have rental linen if needed, for a charge of $50 which covers someone to wash and return it
It's also not a traditional b&b; we aren't nearby and suggest that you only book if you are fine with very simple tasks like turning the gas on and off, making up your beds, getting the fire going etc. We don't have a cleaner, but there is a $30 'cleaning fee' that is applied to every booking and pays a local person to check the house before and after your stay. She doesn't clean the house, so we do ask that you leave it as clean as you found it (vacuum, cleaning cloths etc are provided of course). If the house is left dirty and extra cleaning is needed, it's charged at $30/hour but unless it's been arranged prior to your stay, we'd have to mention it on your review.
There's a bike on site which you are welcome to use. Portacot also provided.
NB: We do not provide linen; unless you choose to rent, you must bring your own sheets, towels etc, as well as food. The cooking facilities are basic (see photos) but adequate to whip up a curry or make your porridge on a cold winter morning.
There is a landline but no internet, and you may find mobile coverage sometimes drops out. There is a TV but no reception; we have DVDs and videos (and a radio and record player)
Dogs are allowed on application, and must be kept away from livestock and leave no sign of their residence...
Dogs are ok with prior discussion, but not cats, sorry. Dogs must be picked up after please and kept on leads when outside the fenced area as there is livestock in the area.
Keep the gates closed at all times
Absolutely no smoking inside; smoking will incur a fee equal to the cost of paying for someone to take curtains down and wash them, which will be substantial.
Accommodation is only for the people booked for; extra people must be discussed with us. There is a limit of six people (plus maybe a baby) - we do not charge extra for extra people, but need to know who's staying.
No parties/functions or similar events at all please, and any damage caused by same will be charged for. If cleaning is needed it's charged at $30/hr but is not built into the service - the deal is that it's left ready for the next person - and if cleaning is needed I'll have to mention that in your review.
House must be left as you found it, including all furniture etc in place, floors vacuumed, bins put out and so on.
Refunds: We have a strict refund policy (50 %) but may refund a percentage closer to the booking depending on your situation and whether our local person has needed to be paid.
Full information provided on booking. which will form part of the terms and conditions.
small family - student/writer and IT specialist, 2 kids. love exploring new towns and using AirBNB places as a base - we like to spend a little time in a city and find an apartment or house makes us feel much more like locals.
When hosting, we like to make sure you are fully informed before your stay as we don't live near the property, and to hear from you anytime about your needs and feedback!
