You've probably researched all about what to do in St. John's (but if you'd like suggestions, I'd be happy to help!) And if you're in the mood for a lasier day, there are lovely things to do in Petty Harbour. There is a waterfall right behind the house and a river that has smaller waterfalls and eddies - a nice little walk. Turn right out of the driveway, walk a couple of minutes up Long Run Road and turn right again, go over a little bridge and you will see a little gravel roadway (heading back in the direction of the house.)
Herbies Old Shoppe Crafts and Collectibles - Turning left out of the driveway, walk a couple of minutes down Long Run Road and you will see Herbies on the left side. Was the general store of Petty Harbour and now is a lovely craft store.
Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium - Continue down Long Run Road a couple more minutes until you reach the intersection with South Side Road - the church will be on your left. South Side runs along the water. The Mini Aquarium is a couple of minutes up South Side road on your left. They capture sea creatures in the spring, keep them in eco-friendly tanks and release them in the fall. There is a touch tank. Great fun for everyone.
East Coast Trail - Petty Harbour has two entrances to the East Coast Trail system, which are marked with signage. One entrance is from Big Hill Road, which is at the top of South Side Road, about 5 minutes walk from the Mini Aquarium. Turn right onto Big Hill Road, go up and after the last house on the right, you will see the access to the trail. Fantastic views of the harbour. The other access point is just up to the left of the Beach (see below).
Chafes Landing Restaurant - Keep walking a few minutes more, around the bend. Chafes is run by a lovely couple (who live across the street from my house) and offers a wonderful selection of local foods, including fish and chips. They are licenced to serve wine and beer also. They are very busy, so call ahead to reserve if you can, otherwise pop in or order a meal to go.
Petty Harbour Convenience Store - Over the bridge left of Chafes.
Watershed Coffee and Baked Goods - Cappuccino, homemade baked goods. Pass the convenience store and you will see the signage. Watershed is down on the wharf!
Petty Harbour Museum - a few minutes further up the road from the Convenience Store, on the left. Artifacts, maps and photos.
Lookout - Keep going around the bend on the main road, there is a lookout where you can get a great view of the harbour, horizon.
Beach - keep going over the main road and you will see guardrails down by the beach. Small but fun, and you can beachcomb. Close to the shoreline, there are little tidepools in the rocks, where you will see mussels, periwinkles, starfish and sea urchins, depending on the tide of course.
North Atlantic Ziplines - Kiosk down on the wharf, just past the convenience store.
Supermarket, Liquor Store, Drugstore - from the driveway, drive right and head up the hill. Long Run Road turns into Petty Harbour Road, which takes you to the Main Road in the Goulds. About a five minute drive. (Brewskies Pub will be on your right and the Corner Store (pizza and baked goods, convenience store.) Turn right onto the Main Road and drive a minute, then right again into Bidgoods Plaza. Bidgoods is a family-run supermarket with decades of history in Newfoundland. They have a little café in the back of the grocery store (called the Mug Up) where you can sit and have a bite. There is also Bidgoods Cove, where there are local crafts. Bidgoods stocks local produce and products such as moose, seal, berries, salt fish, etc.
Keiths Diner, Peters Pizza, Mary Browns Fried Chicken, Big R Restaurant - go left onto Main Road from Petty Harbour Road. Keiths and Peters are on the left a couple of minutes down; Mary Browns and Big R are a couple of minutes down on your right.
