Batesville, Mississippi, Yhdysvallat

One-block from a quaint Southern village and set in a tree-lined, historic neighborhood, Spahn House is a 1904 vintage property run as a professional 4-star boutique hotel with 5 total guest rooms, each with at least 550 sqf, and each with a private bath. Spahn House has 5,000 sqf of public space within the hotel and spacious gardens making it a true Southern mansion.
Period architecture and furniture, 2.5 acres of property with natural gardens and 100-year-old pecan and oak trees. Spacious front porch with outdoor breakfast served when the weather cooperates. 12' foot ceilings, crown molding, picture rails and pocket doors with a center 3-landing oak staircase with hand-hewed rails and balusters and light oak flooring.
We are located in an historic neighborhood in a small Southern-style town with easy walking in the well-kept residential and downtown areas close-by. We are an easy walk to the Tate County Courthouse, located one block south of West Main Street. This remarkable structure was built in 1875 and its history is discussed above. Spahn House is situated adjacent to what was originally an historically-black woman's college that was eventually consolidated with Northwest Mississippi Community College across the city.. The main entrance fronts on College Street and was recently restored. It's facade is considered a unique historical example of art deco design and includes a functioning sundial. Spahn House itself has a remarkable history in the evolution of Senatobia. Built in 1904, it was owned by the descendants of one family who settled in Senatobia is the 1870's. The house was closed in 1973 and remained unoccupied until 1995 when it was purchased and meticulously restored by its current owners. There are many more stories about this remarkable home which we will share with our guests during their stay.

It is a private lake so no license is required for fishing off the dock, and we have fishing poles you can borrow! It was designed with a 450 sq ft studio on the east side of the building facing the driveway, and there is a smaller area on the west side of the building facing the lake that is storage (where the hot water heater, furnace, fishing equipment, and etc is stored). ***There is not a window in the guest house that provides a lake view except a small window by the bed with a partial view of the lake*** We've added some seating on the covered deck outside the storage for more privacy if you want to relax and enjoy the lake. We also have a hammock for you to enjoy near the lake. And off the back of the main house is the covered cement patio with the gas grill, smoker, seating, & etc that you are more than welcome to enjoy as well. Entry to the yard or patio is through the small gate near the patio or through the large gate on the south side of the guest house. ***There is not direct entry to the lake front from the guest house; entry is through the gates only*** I will be as involved or as invisible as you'd like during your stay. What you can expect: A family atmosphere - We have an old dog (Joe) who is a border collie mix that ventures outside occasionally, and a young cat (Robert) that only goes outside through a window to his catio attached to the main house. Myself (Marcie), my husband (Mike), and our daughter (Savannah) live in the main house. Cleanliness - The guesthouse is cleaned thoroughly, and bedding washed after each guest and we have Terminix services Respect - 'Nuff' said. Attention - I work your standard 8-5 Mon-Fri, but I will be available via phone/email if you need to contact me, and Mike is at home most of the day as well. You won't be ignored; unless you request it. :o) Information - Just let me know what it is, and I'll do my best to help you get anything you need during your stay: recommendations, food items, transportation, etc. Everything from helping you plan your day in Memphis - to relaxing by the lake. Airplanes - We are located very close to the airport. We have grown accustom to FedEx flying their planes at 3am every night, but many of you may find it a bit loud. Suggestions would be: bring ear plugs (we try to keep some stocked in the bathroom drawer), leave the TV on, bring your sound machine (there's a small one in the night stand), or stay out way too late & make yourself so tired you don't hear a thing ;-) Sunsets - you can expect some spectacular ones.
I love the peace & quiet of the neighborhood, and still be so close to everything at the same time. I can walk the dog to the city park a block away, have a round a golf at the public golf course 1 mile away, go shopping at the mall in a 10min car ride, go listen to blues on Beale Street in 20min, or play the slots in Tunica only 40min away.

Great little cabin at Horseshoe Lake, 30 minutes from MS River & downtown Memphis. You'll enjoy the covered patio surrounding the cabin and shaded by the towering pecan trees. If you have a boat, you may dock it at our boat slip in the canal at the private surf club, just 1/2 mile down the road from the cabin. Lots of folks have golf carts or ATVs that cruise the neighborhood to wave or stop and visit with each other. You're welcome to bring yours as well and will have parking available.
Update** I have bikes, canoes, and a pontoon boat available for rent. Send me a private message and we can discuss. ** The open kitchen is fully equipped with everything needed for meal prep and cooking. have lots of games and toys. I'm sure you'll also find a puzzle to work on, while not enjoying the outdoors or exploring in Memphis, that's one of our favorite past times while we're at the lake. The washer and dryer are available for your use and come in handy after a day out on the water. You'll love our new gas grill, but we ask that you do provide propane for it. We have a small smoker available as well.
Horseshoe Lake (Crittenden County) Latitude and Longitude: 34º54’48″N 090º18’26″W Elevation: 203 feet Area: 0.136 square miles (2010 Census) Population: 292 (2010 Census) Incorporation Date: September 19, 1983 The town of Horseshoe Lake is located on the old Seyppel area in Crittenden County at the east end of the lake from which it takes its name. Horseshoe Lake is predominately a bedroom community, with the surrounding area consisting of farmland where cotton, feed corn, soybeans, and milo are grown. Some cattle are also raised on the high ground of the levee. The Great River Road encircles the lake. Several legendary blues musicians, including B. B. King, Howlin’ Wolf, and Hurbert Sumlin, once played in juke joints on the plantations. Pre-European Exploration The remnants of Native American civilizations surround Horseshoe Lake. The oldest recorded Indian mounds in the area are believed to be pre-Mississippian, as evidenced from artifacts found dating back to around AD 600. However, many mounds have been completely eroded over the years from farming operations, while others have been looted. Louisiana Purchase through the Gilded Age Mosquito-borne diseases and frequent flooding deterred early colonization of the area. Soon after the War of 1812, the land was surveyed and given to soldiers who fought in the war for payment for their services. Horseshoe Lake is visible as a large oxbow on the survey maps from this time. In 1825, Crittenden County was carved out of Phillips County, and four township divisions were created in the county. One of these was Lucas Township, which encompassed the Horseshoe Lake community. To make this rich bottomland more productive and to help prevent the encroachment of the Mississippi River at flood stage, the Swamp Land Act of 1850 gave patents to levee builder Isaac Burgett, who built a lavish home at what is present-day Seyppel. The Burgett house was said to have been used as a hospital for Union soldiers during the Civil War. The home remained standing until the 1930s. According to historian Margaret Woolfolk, it is believed that the Horseshoe Lake area was the site of a skirmish with Texas Rangers during the Civil War. Early Twentieth Century During the early twentieth century, hunters and lumbermen discovered the lake. It was dammed at Lost Lake Bayou, raising the water level by over six feet. This made it possible to float timber directly from the area to the Mississippi River, where a sawmill was built to process the lumber. Russell Gardner of St. Louis, Missouri—maker of the Banner Buggy and Gardner Automobile—purchased 1,200 acres along the river for his private hunting reserve, and it was named Bruin for the many bears in the area. Five Lakes Outing Club was established by Memphis, Tennessee, residents as a hunting club on the land in the middle of the horseshoe of the lake. They purchased land from Gardner and the Fritz family, among others, and established an immense hunting and fishing reserve for the club’s forty-five members; it is still in operation in the twenty-first century. The Horseshoe Recreation Club was established around the same time and is also still in existence. J. O. E. Beck purchased land on the western side of the lake, stretching to Hughes (St. Francis County). He cleared the land of trees and drained the swampland, putting in over 9,000 feet of drainage tiles some ten feet deep. Bob Snowden purchased 1,000 acres on the northwestern side of the lake and established a commissary known as Baugh Store, which had the first frozen food lockers in the area. Gus Zanone purchased land on the northeastern side of the lake on which to build cabins, and E. H. Clarke Sr. purchase farm land east of the lake. The depth of the lake has been the subject of numerous court cases. The first case was when Five Lakes Outing Club wanted to reclaim land that was flooded after the levee was completed in 1905, increasing the depth of that lake as much as seven feet. The club was allowed to pump water out of the lake and did this for a number of years until the pump broke. The last break in the levee that affected the area was in 1912 and occurred at what is now known as Blue Lake. The floods of 1927 and 1937 also inundated the lake area. Beck and Snowden dug a canal to drain the lake to prevent flooding after the Flood of 1937, but the draining of the lake was opposed, and the lake’s water level remained the same. World War II through the Faubus Era During World War II, the farms in the area were desperate for help, as many of the farmers and field hands were serving in the military. The government assisted by establishing a German prisoner-of-war camp about six miles from Horseshoe Lake, in an area now known as Anthonyville. Roads and bridges were soon built over the Mississippi River, and transportation to the lake moved on wheels instead of water. Many of the river landing post offices moved inland off the levee during this period, with the Seyppel post office being one of the last to close, in 1948. Jack Rich, a developer, created the Horseshoe Lake Estates subdivision in 1965 and sold more than 400 plots of land. All homeowners in the subdivision automatically became members of the Surf Club, which provided the area with water, a club house, a pier, a boat ramp, a canal, a common greenway on the south side of the canal, and a marina to dock boats. The Surf Club is still in existence in the twenty-first century. Modern Era Mechanized farming reduced the need for a large work force to maintain the farms. Tenant houses that once lined the farm roads were torn down, and the population of the area went into a steep decline. The present-day population largely consists of retirees, sportsmen, and a few remaining farmers. The nearest school to the area is in Hughes, about eight miles away. Residents of the Horseshoe Lake Estates subdivision voted to incorporate in 1983, thus creating the town of Horseshoe Lake. The town provided for a fire department, took over the city’s water supply, and installed a sewer treatment system. The W. G. Huxtable Pumping Plant near Marianna (Lee County), completed in 1977, stopped the flooding but also prevented runoff, keeping the lake from replenishing itself. Droughts brought the lake to new lows, and canals dried up, diminishing access to the lake. A vote was taken in 2007, and the Horseshoe District was formed, taxing homeowners around the lake in order to fund the installation of ten pumps to maintain the water level. The drainage canal once built by Beck and Snowden was cleared of brush and widened, and a gate was installed across the bayou to keep the water level constant and prevent flooding. Only one grocery, Bonds Store, remains in the Horseshoe area, serving as a hub of local activity. Summer brings an influx of people from Memphis to the lake. The owners of the property surrounding the lake have sold many lots for summer and retirement homes, renovating or replacing the cabins and tenant houses that once stood there. Horseshoe Lake has an art gallery, Plantation Gallery, to showcase the works of artists throughout the Delta. Several celebrities were raised in the area, including actor Michael Beck, best known for his role in the 1979 film The Warriors; Memphis musician Lee Baker, guitarist for the bands Electric Blue Watermelon and Mudboy and the Neutrons; and Baker’s son, actor Robert Baker, who has appeared in numerous television shows. Come sample farm life at our family homestead and wedding venue. Large oak trees, ponds, horses, dogs, chickens, and a friendly pig enliven the atmosphere around this 500 acre farm just 10 minutes outside of Memphis. You'll sleep well in our converted cozy apartment tucked away behind the barn. You'll feel very far away from the city while being within driving distance.
Nestled behind our barn is a recently renovated space converted from part of our car garage. The space itself is quiet and cozy. If you prefer more sunlight in the mornings or anytime, many guests choose to have coffee and breakfast out on the porch of the car garage in view of the roaming horses. Come and go as you please with a full kitchen and spacious bathroom. Full daybed with a brand new mattress and a twin trundle underneath. We provide Directv and fresh farm eggs upon request (when the chickens cooperate).
We live in a rural area, surrounded mostly by farmland. The neighbors are hard-working people that care about the land and its well-being. However, we're also part of the greater Memphis area, which nicely blends small-town living with the culture of the nearby city.

The house is located on a quiet dead end street that backs up to a lake. There are beautiful trails, a playground, and even a disc golf course all within walking distance. Downstairs there’s is access to the living room, kitchen, and half bath. The back patio offers a hot tub to sit back and relax. The private bedroom is Up stairs with an attached bath. We do have two dogs, both are friendly, well behaved and primarily remain downstairs. We love meeting new people and hope you enjoy your stay!
We are located just minutes from Memphis Tn, there are endless thing to do from night life to family friendly events

The open kitchen is fully equipped with everything needed for meal prep and cooking. have lots of games and toys.
To be clear, the house does not sit on the lake, but down the road a half mile. Also, there is no beach or walk in access to the lake. There is a private fishing pier and boat slips at the surf club, as well as an ARGF public boat ramp on the other side of the lake. Our lake house is located on the lower Sardis lake. Walk a few steps to fish for crappie, bass and catfish off the back deck. There are two grills outside with a fire pit and two bench swings for relaxing at night. This is a great place to stay for large families or two families or a big group. Oxford and Ole Miss are just a short drive away if you are looking to hang out in the grove for a football game or just want to go shop or eat in the historic square in Oxford.
