Birdoswald’s history began when a wooded spur was cleared for the building of Hadrian’s Wall in AD 122. The fort, added to the Wall shortly afterwards, was garrisoned by an infantry cohort of over 800 men and remained in occupation throughout the Roman period. Its defences are the best preserved of any along the Wall. The fort was reoccupied in the Middle Ages and was the target of raids by border reivers in the 16th century.

Vindolanda was a Roman auxiliary fort just south of Hadrian's Wall in northern England. Archaeological excavations of the site show it was under Roman occupation from roughly 85 AD to 370 AD.

Here, you'll find upland birds such as black grouse, breeding waders including curlews, and birds of prey like the hen harrier.

You can join the fabulous B6318 Roman Road (the longest B road in the UK) about a mile away from Tanglewood stretching from Langholm to Heddon-on-the-Wall. From the junction you can cycle to Gilsland for an excellent lunch at the Samson Inn (18 miles). You can then continue on arrow straight roads for another 19 miles to Chollerford with plenty of Roman interest stopovers en route. Cycle uplift can be arranged at your destination subject to availability and a small charge.
