The ruins of Beauly Priory lie at the east end the main square of Beauly. It was one of three priories founded in Scotland by monks of the Valliscaulian order, from the Burgundy region of France, in the years following 1230.
The monks clearly liked what they found when they arrived, for Beauly was referred to in the 1230s as Prioratus de Bello Loco: Latin for "Priory of the Lovely Spot". This suggests that the name Beauly, from the French beau lieu or "beautiful place" dates back far beyond the popular belief that it was based on a comment made by Mary Queen of Scots during her visit in the summer of 1564.

Visit the historic Priory and enjoy a river walk from Lovat Bridge (about 3km south of the village) before lunch at the deli "Corner on the Square". In summer the local pipe band often plays in the square (covid permitting)

You can't actually visit this, although you get good views from the Lovat Bridge walk! This is the ancestral home of the Lord Lovat - chiefs of Clan Fraser. Simon Fraser, 11th Lord Lovat (c. 1667 – 9 April 1747, London), nicknamed 'the Fox', was a Scottish Jacobite and Chief of Clan Fraser of Lovat, known for his feuding and changes of allegiance. In 1715, he had been a supporter of the House of Hanover, but in 1745 he changed sides and supported the Stuart claim on the crown of the United Kingdom. Lovat was among the Highlanders defeated at the Battle of Culloden and convicted of treason against the Crown, following which he was sentenced to death and subsequently beheaded. More famously (!) he was the grandfather of Jamie Fraser in the Outlander novels. The memorial in the square commemorates the local regiment "The Lovat Scouts" and their service in the Boer War. The 15th Lord was another soldier - who famously led his commandos ashore on D-day accompanied by his personal piper

The Old School is a Gift Shop with a small book shop section. It a little bit off the main square - about 100m on the road North (to Dingwall), just beyond the Priory ruins

Sightseeing
Drive south from Beauly following signs for Cannich. In the village centre look out for a sign to the right for Glen Affric. After 2 miles reach Fasnakyle Power station - turn right again at another sign for Glen Affric. After about 3.5 miles you reach the beautiful Dog Falls, where there are a number of way marked footpaths.

Worth a visit for sightseeing and obviously to catch a glimpse of the famous monster. A drive around the loch takes in the attractive villages of Drumnadrochit and Fort Augustus and Urquhart Castle is worth a visit.

Well worth a visit if you are interested in the history of the highlands. The visitor centre provides a lot of information on life in the highlands around the 1745 rebellion, the battle itself, and the brutal aftermath which brought an end to the clan system

The "Black Isle" isn't an island, but a long peninsula stretching from near Beauly out to the village of Cromarty. Its worth a visit for quiet roads, nice villages (Fortrose, Rosemarkie & Cromarty). Fortrose is a great spot for Dolphin watching, where the dolphins often come very close to shore to feed near the lighthouse - best at high tide

The county town of Ross-shire. Very quiet small market town, but a few nice shops and a large supermarket. You can watch a football match here, as the local side, Ross County, play in the Scottish Premier league! C'mon the Staggies!!
