Surrounding areas

Quirky, friendly and just beautiful. Todmorden is unapologetically itself and is full of nice people who are just minding their own business! It has a brilliant second hand bookshop run by the wonderful Mr Lyall, a beautiful antique furniture shop called Transform, Yakumama - serving the best Sunday brunch ever, The Honest John which serves the best hanging halloumi kebabs and good cocktails. There’s also Woody’s pizza which is well worth popping down to. Their crack fries are the best ever. Site pizza does some lovely dishes and beautiful pizzas. In the summer, the courtyard at the back is a great spot. The boardroom which is a little cafe serving cakes and where you can play any game you choose. The cafe is also ace. Simple, homemade food such as all day breakfasts and cakes. The market is fab if a bit random and the tourist info office is friendly and helpful. There’s a lovely antique and up cycled furniture shop next to Tod Almighty (whole foods etc) run by our friend Pete. He creates the most beautiful pieces and is our go to when decorating our home. In all, so many lovely places and friendly spots. On a practical level, for supermarket shopping, we have an Aldi - straight down Burnley Road on your right opposite the bus station. Lidl - left at roundabout next to the town hall and along past the health centre. Morrisons - straight on at the roundabout (2nd exit) and past ‘Baked’ and ‘Site’ on your left.

Cornholme
Cornholme is a tiny little village between Todmorden and Cliviger. It’s stunning in terms of nature. Nestled in a steep valley, it’s surrounded by fantastic walks and views along the top of the hills. The surrounding woods are stunning and we are lucky enough to have retained ancient woodland which is short walk upwards! It is steep and does require walking boots but it is well worth the deep breaths!

Hebden Bridge is renowned for its quirky vibe and its diversity. Beautiful countryside and a cute little town which contains one of our fave pubs ever - The White Lion. No one does cheese and onion pie in the same way! The walks at Hardcastle Crags are the best bit though and the view of Gibson Mill along the river. For the best chai Latte or hot chocolate go to Squeeze on Crown Street in Hebden. Lovely staff and lovely snacks and toasties. Chilled out vibe always! ☮️

Any Ted Hughes fans need to visit here and do the walks to Churn Milk Joan or Scout rock. Stunning walks in this part of the valley. Steep but well worth the hike!

From The Little House you drive up along the Long Causeway up up and up via Pudsey Road. Eventually after you’ve driven past Hawkstones and through Slack, you reach the village of Heptonstall which is actually mentioned in the Doomsday book. It’s an absolutely stunning little village which receives many visitors thanks to it being Sylvia Plath’s resting place. There’s always lots of pens placed on her tombstone so is pretty easy to find! It’s also the place where King David Hartley and his wife Grace are buried. Lots of filming took place here recently on its old cobbles for the BBC drama The Gallows Pole which tells his story. Well worth reading and a really beautiful place to visit. Afterwards, drop down in Hebden Bridge and the view from the top is incredible. Use the turning circle and head back into Hebden Bridge to go to the white lion, or even Squeeze for a fab hot chocolate.

This is the area infamous for the Yorkshire Coiners and their nefarious schemes! The Gallows Pole is Ben Myers’ genius work of fiction which tells the story of ‘King’ David Hartley and how his gang of coiners almost brought down the economy. Well worth a read but even if you don’t, the area where the criminal activities took place is absolutely breathtaking. We love the walk from Parrock up through Broadhead Clough Nature Reserve up onto Erringdon Moor. From there you can see Bell House where David Hartley lived and could see any unwanted visitors from any point! There are plenty of trails down back into Mytholmroyd and if it’s Sunday, The Dusty Miller does a great Sunday lunch.

Short walks

Turn right at the end of the drive and walk down past the church. Cross over the road and keep going until you reach Frieldhurst Road. Turn up this road and climb up into the woods straight ahead. Gorgeous ancient trees and little cloughs. Keep going up to Shore Chapel and onwards and upwards to Bridestones if you want a much longer route. Alternatively, once you’ve passed the houses on the right and you start to walk up towards the path which is the entrance to the wood, you’ll notice several stiles on the right hand side with the yellow and black arrows. All of these routes are absolutely stunning and lead across to the Bridestones Moor. Pretty much whichever way you choose, you’ll be rewarded with beautiful views and lots of ancient woodland. Ask if you’re unsure and we’ll point you in the right direction!

Turn left and walk along to Pudsey Road on the opposite side of Burnley Road. Walk up Pudsey Road for about ten minutes, past houses and cottages until you reach a stile with a warning sign of steep slopes on the right hand side. Go over the style and walk along up above the stream. You’ll see the waterfall into what the locals call ‘the frying pan’ which is a pool used by some wild swimmers. Not large enough for swimming but lovely nonetheless. For wild swimming, you need Gaddings Dam which is via The Shepherd’s Rest at Lumbutts. Keep going up to Reddyshore Rocks and beyond up and up to Hawkstones or Bridestones. Beautiful little walk and not strenuous if you choose to stop at the rocks.

Aim to book here and if you sit upstairs you get a great view of the old town hall. Half of the mural is Lancashire and half is Yorkshire!

Lots of choice on the menu here and the set menus are really good. They also do bottomless brunch and then you can always hop on the bus back to The Little House. Lots of burgers, vegan burgers, fish and chips and really good wines served here. Tasteful decor and lovely atmosphere.

This Is SQUEEZE in Hebden Bridge where they serve great breakfasts, the best chai lattes and the best cheese and chutney toastie in the world! It’s right opposite the Nisa store in Hebden where Neil from Happy Valley worked so you can drink great coffee next to a location from the series. They sell lovely chutneys and artisan coffees (including Dark Woods) which is great coffee ☕️

May need booking but they do walk-ins too. High up above Hebden with the most amazing views. This is a proper country pub which serves the best home made food and the menu is huge! When you’re in the bar, look up and you’ll see the Sistene Chapel! Really friendly proprietors and Timothy Taylor ales. Keep climbing up Midgley Road and along the tops for an ace pub experience.

Great place for craft beers and casual eating. Try the Milk stout on offer - you won’t regret it! The food is burgers, dirty fries etc but good quality and plenty of it!
