Local towns and walks

Abbeyleix heritage town is a lovely spot to stroll along its Main Street and explore its old shop fronts including the wonderful old world Morriseys pub which still remains all of its original character. When approaching from the Ballacolla Road you will notice the limestone old South National School and at the top of the top of the town you will see the North School, both of which built by the DeVesci family for the town of Abbeyleix who formerly owned the Abbeyleix Estate. The North School, now the Heritage House has wonderful information about the old railway that used to stop at Abbeyleix and carpets which were manufactured in the town for the Titanic. Abbeyleix Bog walk and Collins Loop are walks which bring you along the old railway line and board walks that allow you to explore the wonder of the natural boglands. A map of the walks are located at the entrance to the Manor hotel where is best to park to enter the bog walk. The bog walk can be a shorter loop of approx 30 mins to a much longer loop of approx 1-1.5 hours. There are numerous places for food in the town; for coffee and lunches there’s Pollys at the Manor car park (stone fired pizzas also on Fri, sat and Sun evenings), and the Gaelic kitchen in the town centre which has a lovely array of homemade sandwiches, pies, salads and sweet treats (open Thurs-Sun). The delicious Meuller and O’Connell bakery is located in the old bank on the corner where you can enjoy freshly made sour dough breads, coffee, pastries, croissants and sausage rolls. McEvoys bistro is a great spot to eat in the evening-best book in advance as regularly busy from 7-9pm.
