Hadrians Wall is 73 miles long from coast to coast. It begun in AD 122 in the reign of Emperor Hadrian. There are forts every 5 miles. Hadrian wanted to 'keep the empire intact' and 'separate the Romans from the barbarians' !!

The 15th century Gatehouse is the sole survivor of a small Benedictine Priory.
The Wetheral Caves (St Constantines Cells) are a short walk away, along the river, through Inglewood Woods. These caves are cut into the rocks and overlook the River Eden. They were used as a refuge for the monks.
