Heian Jingu is a large shrine which hosts the Festival of the Ages as well as a lot of traditional weddings. Free of charge during the day, but you will need to pay to enter the wonderful gardens.

Konkai Komyo-ji (Kurodani) is a large temple coplex with various interesting buildings and sub-temples and a very impressive main gate (south). The views of Kyoto city from here are also quite nice.

Rokujian cafe and gallery is a great spot to stop for coffee or lunch. They have very reasonable lunch sets and very clean and cozy surrounds. Please say "HI" to Yumi and Sota (they speak English).

Okariba (Hunting Grounds) restaurant is one of the top places on Tripadvisor. A smoky charcoal grill specialising in exotic meats like boar, bear and horse. Very friendly owner, casual atmosphere and English menus.
