In 1972 a boatload of free-thinking, peace loving hippies arrived on Amherst Island and Topsy Farms was born shortly thereafter. This is a farm that has held strong to their values and was eco-friendly and environmentally conscious long before those words became mainstream. When you visit, you’re visiting more than just a farm, it’s a way of life, a source of passion and a place to destress and find your roots. Situated on Amherst Island, the farm’s property includes over 200 acres of bushland and is part of a large forest network that covers a good portion of the island. It abounds with natural life, and continues to the western shoreline to the ‘bluffs’, where cannons once stood during the war of 1812. Make sure to pack your hiking shoes. There are many re-established pathways that were first used by deer, then cleared by several generations of farmers to gather firewood and to work in the impressive Sugar Shack. You can visit the Sugar Shack any time of the year; to get there, travel down the well-groomed 2 km trail. Topsy Farms is a pretty cool experience right from the get-go. To get there you have to take a short ferry ride over to Amherst Island. Which, is also an interesting and welcoming spot so make sure to have some extra time to explore. Once you arrive on the island, head to the north-west corner where Topsy Farms is located and you’ll find this fully-functioning sheep farm in action. Topsy raises happy sheep and depending on the season, you might see lambs being birthed in adjacent fields, or happily frolicking in the fields. You’ll have the opportunity to buy wool blankets and other natural products right at the farm. And, depending on when you come, you may even get to see the sheep being sheared.

Get up close and personal as you wander amongst grazing alpacas. No matter how urban you are, you’re going to love this little farm. It is truly a haven for all the animals that call it home. Of course the star attraction are the alpacas that you can feed right out of your hand. But, there are a lot of other farmyard friends that will be vying for your attention including chickens, roosters, ducks, pigs, goats and horses. There are even a couple peacocks that strut around and show off for visitors. This is a busy place – book an appointment to avoid disappointment Tours are free, donations are appreciated

Over 200 years of farming heritage has turned this brewery into a thriving and delicious destination. Enjoy the rustic but stunning barn while you sip on one of their brews. Ivan and Daniel MacKinnon are 8th generation farmers who have turned their family farm into a thriving craft brewery. Putting the traditions and heritage that have been passed down into practice to create some really incredible beers. The hops, wheat, and barley is grown right on the farm and creates beer which is emboldened with the unique character of rural Canada. The renovated century old barns house the equipment, and planted hops and malting barley grows in the surrounding fields. Every summer they host Back to the Farm, a beer and music festival featuring craft beer, tours, food trucks, games and of course great music. Weekends you’ll find Old (Texas) Style BBQ set up. Twelve Barrels is locally blended Canadian based on an old recipe distilled along the Napanee River in 1853. While several mainstream Canadian whiskies use corn as their primary grain – Twelve Barrels takes things back to the good old days by using wheat and rye as the grains of choice – with only 35% being corn. The result is a smooth flavour profile with a sweet finish when enjoyed neat or on the rocks. There are some spicy notes and a distinctly unique character. It’s fantastic on its own or mixed in cocktails. My personal favourite is to mix an Old Fashioned using 12 Barrels, which makes for a sophisticated cocktail that will give you an all-new perspective on an old favourite. Twelve Barrels is available at several LCBO stores and can also be found served in select local bars, pubs and restaurants. If you’d like to book a hosted tasting event – or whisky etiquette or cocktail mixing workshop you can also make arrangements on their website.

Burt’s Greenhouses in Odessa. Ingenuity and resourcefulness drive the operations at Burt's Greenhouse for the good of the plants and the environment. Back in 1981, the decision Burt and his wife made to start up a greenhouse operation was completely serendipitous. Burt’s father was retiring, and the couple had moved to Odessa to take over his dairy farm. Hayward wanted a market garden, and Burt, who’d had such a garden in his teens, was completely on board. They thought they might rent part of a nearby greenhouse to grow seedlings — but the owners, who were nearing their own retirement, suggested they rent the whole thing. “And that’s how it all started,” Burt says. “The opportunity was there and we took it. Maybe being 24 at the time explains the decision.” Burt’s Greenhouses is known not only for the quality of its plants, but also for the ingenuity with which they grow. To keep greenhouses within an ideal temperature range for the plants, Burt burns wood chips that provide heat as needed. In 2009, Burt won a regional Premier’s Award for Agri-Food Innovation Excellence for finding a way to control the airflow in the heating system so that emissions were greatly reduced, to the benefit of the environment. At the same time, he developed a way of feeding woodchips into the stoker that reduced power consumption. “The main advantage of this heating system is environmental,” Burt says. “By burning wood instead of oil, we get a smaller carbon footprint. It’s not that we use so much less energy, but getting the energy from wood means we’re using a renewable source instead of oil. And we save a bit of money as well, probably about half of the cost of heating with oil.” Hundreds of different plant species are grown at Burt’s Greenhouses. The list for potatoes alone is daunting — Adirondack Blue, Adirondack Red, Dark Red Chieftan, Goldrush, Irish Cobbler, Red Thumb, Superior, Yukon Gem, Yukon Gold, their particular traits all described on the website. Twenty species of begonias are listed more briefly. Three types of blueberry. Five types of cabbage. Twelve types of clematis. Seven types of cucumber. Ten types of delphinium. Five types of eggplant. Twenty-seven types of hosta. One wonders how 60,000 square feet of space can contain it all. Even in winter, Burt’s Greenhouses have a very long product list that includes, among other items, beet greens, broccoli microgreens, buckwheat shoots, endive, green leaf sorrel, kale, leaf fennel, microgreen cilantro, mizuna, nasturtium leaves, pepper grass, red leaf sorrel and Swiss chard. After a dark and cold winter, words can’t describe how beautiful it is to take in the sight of all that green.

The County Bounty is a locally owned and operated soda company in Downtown Greater Napanee. Owner Dodie Ellenbogen uses locally-grown Ontario fruits, all natural ingredients and less sugar than other soda brands. Pick up a mix pack, or holiday advent calendar to try out the unique and delicious flavours. The County Bounty is located at 8 Bridge Street in Napanee. You’ll also find their soda locally at Ellena's Cafe in Napanee and MacKinnon Brothers Brewing Company in Bath. The County Bounty began as a market garden organic vegetable farm in 2016 outside of Picton in Prince Edward County mainly focusing on a 20 person CSA and restaurant sales. At the end of her second season of farming, Dodie Ellenbogen was gifted a large flat of strawberries that were about to turn and spoil by a friend in the hopes that she, as a farmer, would be able to preserve the last of the summer in some way. Many farmers branch out into jams and preserves to be able to stretch out their produce over the winter months but Dodie simply did not have the passion or skill to preserve anything well, so she began to search for other things to do with these strawberries. Luckily she came across a recipe for cordials which is a syrup that you can add to sparkling water to make your own sodas at home. She began to experiment with all sorts of weird and wonderful local flavours in unique combinations to create some cordials for market and they were so well received that she decided to take it to the next level and pursue bottled soda. In 2018 she launched the sodas as a farm value-added product and it caught like wild-fire! She has now switched to making soda as her full time pursuit but has not forgotten her roots as a farmer and she continues to support her fellow local farmers by sourcing as much Ontario-grown produce as possible. As the sodas have scaled up and life has moved on, Dodie and her partner, along with their son, have moved to the close-by community of Napanee and have expanded the soda operation into a larger facility with a retail store and tasting bar.
