Parking is park and ride (approx £10) and the car park can fill up very quickly so worth setting off early. It's about 45 minutes to the car park but the most beautiful drive. Allow at least 3 hours to get to the top of the mountain.

Definitely one for a special occasion, this is a historic house turned hotel but does have a 5 star rating and you can go there for lunch / supper. It's a beautiful drive of around 35 minutes to get there.

Truly delicious pizza, made to order. It can get very busy in Betws Y Coed, so probably worth phoning an order in to collect it if you are coming back from the mountains, or just want an outing. Betws y Coed is about 30 minutes away

World famous Italianate village built by Clough Williams-Ellis and site of the TV series 'The Prisoner'. It's a fabulous setting and there is lots of walking through the gardens and down the light house if you want. No dogs allowed in.

An amazing chapel that is definitely worth stopping in to see if you are on your way to Machynlleth or Dolgellau. Fabulous carvings on the pews and an amazing copper pulpit and altar. It is usually open (door round the back).

Quite a long winding single track road to get to the car park but you will be glad you persevered! worth visiting Gwydir castle on your way there if you can, or if you feel like lunch check of Ffin y Parc or Hangin' Pizza in Betws (see food scene)

Right on your doorstep - the walk around the Alwen is lovely. Allow 3 hours and I would walk it anti clockwise (I know the signs send you clockwise, but I think it is prettier anti clockwise!). You can have your dogs off the lead, and it is stick and flick policy so no need for bags. Enjoy it!

The next door lake - you can walk there in about 45 minutes and they do a cholestrol filled breakfast! It is about 3 1/2 hours to walk around it and I would do it clockwise rather than anti clockwise. You can also rent mountain bikes here but do book ahead.

You need to be fit if you want to walk this one. The first 500 feet or so is up a staircase!!! Worth it for the views though. Pay to park at the base and if it is windy I wouldn't go as the ridge can feel quite precarious.....
