I love this place, walkable from the holiday cottage (just up the hill, and then up a bit more, so a workout!) It is a really interesting place to learn a bit more about the slate industry in a much more low key way than at one of the bigger places, and the view from the cafe...well you can't really get better. Well worth a visit. (The play farm owned and run by the same people is a brilliant place to keep little kids happy too)

Places to see wildlife

Amazing little reserve with so much history, it used to be a bustling industrial site making explosives for all over the world. Now it is home to loads of fantastic wildlife, bats, nightjars, pied flycatcher, glow worms, slow worms.....just wonderful, and the views are breathtaking! Free entry and plenty of parking,

We are so lucky to have Osprey nesting really close to here (about 20 minutes drive) The little visitor centre is looked after by the most lovely enthusiastic helpful volunteers and it is a rare opportunity to see these magnificent birds thriving. You may, if you are lucky see them fishing in the Mochras lagoon just down the road from us. (Bring binoculars or a telescope and you could look out for them from your sitting room or bedroom window ;))

What can I say? This is our beach, 10 minutes walk from the house, you can watch the tide come in and out from the house or garden and then go down there as often as you like. We have sandy bits with cowries, Pelican foot shells, Augur shells, a Mussel bed at low tide, sometimes samphire. There are rocky bits for stone balancing and searching for marine creatures. With patience and time to kill, you can see dolphins, Gannets, Manx Shearwater and Terns out to sea, and if you are lucky and the Ringed Plovers have been undisturbed, nests or young Ringed Plovers pipping along the beach. (If you pop into the womens loo there is a mural which will help you identify some of the birds you might encounter) Llandanwg is just a hidden jewel of a place.

This remote, peaceful little nature reserve is a must for people who love peace, tranquility and spending time in nature. Unspoiled Celtic rainforest, home to Pied Flycatchers in the Summer and the wild goats all year around. It's not the easiest of paths around there, you will need good footwear and take it steady, but in summer, to sit in the forest, surrounded by birdsong, Pied Flycatcher, Redstart, Cuckoos, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Wood Warbler, Nuthatch, TreeCreeper....well it's just the best antidote to hustle and bustle there is.

Lovely things to do

Why wouldn't you want to sit in a whisky barrel of lovely warm seaweed infused water looking out over the Menai Straits! Seriously, it is such a relaxing thing to do, and with a very interesting visit around the famous salt making set up, and a gift shop that is gorgeous. An hour away from us, but so worth it!

If you really do want to give yourself a massive treat, Steve at Snowdonia flight school offers flights in his little plane (sorry you will have to ask him for technical details) All I can say is it is breathtaking to fly over the house, to see Eryri from the sky, and to take in the glorious wild open spaces of this beautiful area.
