Tuas has a secret beach! And it has clean, powdery sand and tranquil waters. The journey here is guaranteed to be pleasant. Picture your lone car cruising down long, winding roads, large fields that seem to have no end, and lalangs adorning every patch of green. Hardly anyone comes here, so it’s an ideal place for a romantic road-trip! Even though the backdrop of industrial vessels and ships gives this place an almost dystopian feel, there’s an odd sense of beauty that is satisfyingly calming.

Along the North-Western coastline of Singapore lies the rustic Lim Chu Kang Jetty. It was here where the Japanese made their first invasion attempt on Singapore in 1942, resulting in heavy bloodshed. Today, you can take in the sights of the Johor Strait as you stroll down ramshackle wooden bridges, take a nice, quiet boat ride to the floating kelongs, or try to spot the lonely pier-house from the jetty.

Admire the View from Jurong Hill and Stroll through the Garden of Fame Perched on the top of Jurong Hill is a tired, old tower which looks like it hasn’t been in contact with civilisation for years. However, don’t let its looks fool you. Muster enough willpower to climb to the top, and you will be rewarded with an aerial view of Jurong Town. The compound is also home to the Garden of Fame, where foreign dignitaries such as Queen Elizabeth II, Ferdinand E. Marcos, Suharto, and Deng Xiaoping planted trees.

The Astronomy 101 Series is held on the second Friday of every month at 8pm and 9pm, with each talk lasting about 20 minutes. Reflections at Bukit Chandu is a World War II interpretive centre, honouring the heroism of the 1,400 soldiers from the Malay Regiment who stood up against a 13,000-strong Japanese Army in the Battle of Pasir Panjang. The serenity of this place makes it almost impossible to believe that one of the fiercest battles in Singapore history took place in the area. The reality of the horrific violence and low regard for human life will slowly sink in as you explore the compound and feed your knowledge, making this place ideal for reflection and inspiration.

The very place where the historic surrender of the British to the Japanese on 15 February 1942 took place, happens to be right behind my house. Previously Ford’s first motor car assembly plant in Southeast Asia, the building is now a World War II exhibition gallery and repository. The lives of Singaporeans under Japanese Occupation are vividly captured in the exhibitions, serving as a continuation from the one on the last battles fought at Bukit Chandu. With so many museums in the West dedicated to the WWII, us Westies should be experts on the subject already!

Food Scene

There is good roast duck pizza right here in the West! The plum sauce is tasty and tangy, and the outer layer of the roast duck gives that perfect crunch. The Tea Party Cafe is nestled comfortably in the heart of Bukit Timah. With board games, magazines, and plush sofas to lounge on, it’s a great place for you and your friends to kick back, bond, and enjoy this interesting slice of goodness.
