Drinks & Nightlife

This is a local Pub that is a little more sane, being off the main touristy central Camden madness-zone. Good quality pub-food, nice beer, and an outside eating area which is really for smokers, but is nice in the summer. On Sunday afternoons, they offer a good British Sunday Roast dinner, and on Sunday evenings, they have live music (of the more folky variety). It's one of my favourite pubs :-)

Do you like Thai Food? This is a very traditional feeling British pub, that serves delicious Thai food. Again, it's off the beaten path and has a lot of locals. They often have live, folky, music in the evenings. It's warm and cozy on cold days, and has a nice garden out the back, on the warm ones. Highly recommended as one of the area's better, less touristy pubs

The Unicorn has live music which is less folky and way way more towards the punk/garage/metal realm of things. I'm no pro on this genre of music by any stretch of the immagination - but I know some folks who really like hanging out at the unicorn for a few pints and some tunes. This is one of the closest of the local 'watering holes' - it's gone through several owner changes in the past while I think. Now, the food is a bit more upscale, though still fairly affordable. I understand their Sunday brunch is quite nice. It's a cozy pub too, though it is quite busy at the weekend. Check out their website: http://thecolonelfawcett.co.uk

Shopping

Open until 11pm, this local convenience shop is very convenient. It's only about 30 metres from my home, great for snacks, food and a bottle of wine. Recommended for food mostly.

the Tesco Express / Esso Petrol station on Camden Road is nothing much, but they have costa coffee, Krispy Kream doughnuts, beer/wine, food, sandwiches and most of all, they are open 24/7. That's right, if you wake up at 3am with Jet Lag and you're hungry because it's supper or breakfast time in your time zone, you can walk just 10 minutes over the road to the Tesco and get a fresh cup of coffee and something to eat. Oh yeah, they also have an ATM (Cash Machine)!

Food Scene

This is a close, and convenient place to grab a quick sandwich, breakfast, or cup of coffee. It's small, but the folks are friendly. It used to be a Portuguese tapas restaurant, but has undergone some changes in the past few years.

The Prichard and Ure Cafe is tucked away in the Camden Garden Centre - tourists would never know it's here - but you do now! http://www.pritchardandure.com/new-page/ It's really an oasis of calm, just 8 minutes walk from my place and a stone's throw from mad, mad, Camden. I really recommend this as an awesome place to go grab some coffee or breakfast. The service isn't always great but there's a good reason, they're a Socially Responsible business and are offering training to get folks back in to work. They also source sustainable and ethical products - you should really go there!

This is actually a Pub - but it's a gastro-pub and the food is really really good. It's not for the super-low budget, but it's worth every penny. It's quiet, local, has a nice outside back garden and a tradition pub interior - did I mention how awesome the food is?

This is now called "The Depot" and is a really great local pub. They have some craft beers on tap and a really nice, quiet outdoor eating area in the courtyard beneath the theater. I think what I like most about The Depot is their food - it's not that expensive, but it's really good! I enjoy their pizza as well as their Sunday roast (the vegetarian option is a nice nut roast). Weekend evenings, inside, it can get a bit loud though and hard to have a conversation, particularly if it's a match day.

Open in the evenings, this is a fairly new place and I haven't fully investigated it, but other guests have told me the food is good! It serves a vegetarian, indian buffet - and the prices are well reasonable. Like Indian food? give it a go - it's just up the road :-)

Are you looking for a 'cheap and cheerful', "traditional" English 'greasy spoon' - that is to say, an inexpensive place to get bacon, eggs, beans, toast and sausage for breakfast - this is just up the road. Nothing fancy, just an honest 'fry-up'

http://poppiesfishandchips.co.uk/ - These guys are a destination if you're looking for traditional, authentic, English Fish and Chips. As a vegetarian, I have never tried these myself - but I noticed a few of my guests bringing back poppies take-away and decided to look them up. They get good reviews on Google and they have a nice website - It will be VERY BUSY if you go down on a weekend, try a bit earlier in the day if you're not into crowds.

Everything Else

Are you an Amy Winehouse fan? Amy Winehouse lived just 2 streets over at number 30 Camden Square. The Tree across from her home continues to be a pilgrimage destination for music fans. I understand that the house sold for 7.5 million pounds!

Do you like Gyms? This is a good one - there's no pool, but there are just about all the machines you can imagine, plus free weights and such. You need to buy a day pass online to use it https://www.puregym.com/gyms/london-highgate/ for £8.99. The easiest way to get there from here - go up to the top of my road (by the shell station) and take bus 393 from Camden Park Road Cliff Villas Stop - getting off at Kentish Town Station and walking up Highgate road from there.

If you like to get a swim in, and you're not up for trying an outdoor pool like they have up near Parliament Hill - The Cally Pool and Gym is an option for you. Take bus no. 374 from just around the corner on Agar Grove to Caledonian Road/Copenhagen street - then walk back a few dozen meters. The day passes are £10/day here - There's another Better Gym with a much nicer pool and better gym facilities near St. Pancras station - but the day passes there are £15/day :(

Parks & Nature

This is a lovely, quiet park just 5 minutes away. I used to go here to jog, and often walk around in the paths through the trees. This park is on the site of the old Caledonian Road Cattle Market , but no trace remains of that old market except the names of the streets and the old clock tower. Also a nice place for a picnic in the summer, or a good place to play Pokémon Go if you're into that.

This is a magnificent, quiet, forested, urban nature reserve tucked away in the very centre of London. You'd never know you were 2 minutes from Kings Cross. Essentials

This is a small, local Dry Cleaner and Laundry place. It's clean and friendly and the folks that run it are nice :-) I have a washing machine that you can use in my flat, but if you want your clothes washed and dried faster, or have several loads, or need to dry-clean that mustard stain out of your good clothes, these guys are the place to go - and only a few dozen meters from my front door.

Getting Around

This is the stop you get off at when taking the 390 from Kings Cross to My place. you can see, it's just at the top of St. Augustines road. Step off the bus, go left, then go straight down the road you see there - it's St. Augustines, and about 1 1/2 streets down, on the left, is my place - very convenient for transport.

Here is where you catch the 390 to go TO Kings Cross - it's about 10 minutes, but if you have a connection to get before 6am, the 390 is less frequent. Probably easier to take an Uber taxi, or walk to Kings Cross in the early mornings.

From My place, cross Agar Grove at the Nisa local at the corner, follow the bike path, it becomes Camley street .. keep going straight till you see Kings Cross :-). The top end of Camley street is a little industrial, but I've always found it safe.
