Delicious and different, with exotic and sophisticated flavors. Uniquely African Indian and Portuguese blended shared dishes. Plus, it's not pretentious at all. It's Mozambique home cooking on the street. In the heart of Mouraria neighborhood! One of my favourites in town!

The Jeronimos Monastery is the most impressive symbol of Portugal's power and wealth during the Age of Discovery. King Manuel I built it in 1502 on the site of a hermitage founded by Prince Henry the Navigator, where Vasco da Gama and his crew spent their last night in Portugal in prayer before leaving for India. It was built to commemorate Vasco Da Gama's voyage and to give thanks to the Virgin Mary for its success. Vasco da Gama's tomb was placed inside by the entrance, as was the tomb of poet Luis de Camões, author of the epic The Lusiads in which he glorifies the triumphs of Da Gama and his compatriots. Other great figures in Portuguese history are also entombed here, like King Manuel and King Sebastião, and poets Fernando Pessoa and Alexandre Herculano. Jeronimos Monastery Cloisters The monastery was populated by monks of the Order of Saint Jerome (Hieronymites), whose spiritual job was to give guidance to sailors and pray for the king's soul. It is one of the great triumphs of European Gothic (UNESCO has classified it a World Heritage monument), with much of the design characterized by elaborate sculptural details and maritime motifs. This style of architecture became known as Manueline, a style of art that served to glorify the great discoveries of the age.

Viewed from the north bank and the city of Lisbon, the other side of the Tagus River (its left bank) is often regarded as unknown territory. Cacilhas, the small location where the ferryboats dock directly across from Lisbon, features some of the best restaurants specialized in fresh fish and seafood in the region. It is also a great place to sit in one of its several pavement caffés along the promenade while enjoying one of the best views of Lisbon, lying across the river. Catch the Metro and head to Cais do Sodré (on the green line) and then walk across to the Ferry Terminal in Cais do Sodré.

It offers the best panoramic view of Lisbon, which is also observed by a small image of the Virgin that gives the place its name ("Our Lady of the Mount"). Behind the image is a small chapel from the 1700s, which is almost always closed. According to an old legend, pregnant women who sat on the stone chair inside would have a problem-free childbirth. This spot is especially popular at sunset, but during the day there are also those who stay for hours in the shade of the olive trees, cypresses and pines. To get here, walk down Rua da Graça from Largo da Graça, and turn left at Rua da Senhora do Monte.

Lisbon's most photographed street is probably Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo. It's in the historic and picturesque neighborhood of Bica, one of the city's most traditional neighborhoods, known for its small bars and especially for the iconic funicular that runs through it. Constantly photographed by tourists, the funicular has been going up and down the hill since 1892. The tiny neighborhood, found between the Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré districts, is made up of cobbled lanes and stairways, dating back to 1597, after a landslide.

3 minutes walking from our flat ! Named after Britain's Edward VII who visited the city in 1903 to reaffirm the Anglo-Portuguese alliance, this is the largest park in central Lisbon. The big attractions within the park are the two estufas, the hothouse (with the more exotic plants) and the greenhouse ("Estufa Fria") filled with tropical plants, ponds, and endless varieties of palms and cacti. The view from the top is incredible!

This public garden at the top of a hill opened in the 1960s with a view over Avenida da Liberdade and all of downtown. It remains one of the best hideaways in the city, renovated in 2009 with a cafe on the lower terrace. That's also where you find a pond with an 18th-century mermaid statue, which turns into a pool every August for the "beach of Torel." To get here you have the help of the Elevador do Lavra, the city's oldest funicular.

Just a 15 minute walk from our flat! One step in is enough to escape the sometimes chaotic city environment. Here you will find a peaceful and extraordinarily beautiful place in all its extension. The vegetation is dense and varied and ducks run free in the garden. The paths are romantically labyrinthine and there are many interesting corners to discover. There is even a lake and several terraces to enjoy the sunny days in Lisbon. It is also a great place to contemplate the architecture of the buildings that constitute the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, including the magnificent outdoor auditorium. This garden is truly an oasis in Lisbon! Once you are there, don't forget to visit the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and the Museum of Modern Art. If you plan it right, you may even have the opportunity to attend to a top quality classic music concert.

Portugal's "national gallery" is the Ancient Art Museum, opened in 1884 in a 17th-century palace. Its most significant works include Hieronymus Bosch's "Temptation of Saint Anthony" and Albrecht Dürer's "Saint Jerome," but the main highlight is a 15th century masterpiece attributed to Portuguese artist Nuno Gonçalves, called the "Panels of St. Vincent." After a visit to the museum, relax in its delightful garden with river views, where you may sit enjoying a drink or meal from the café.

Cais do Sodré, located near the old port along the riverside in downtown Lisbon, was once considered Lisbon’s Red Light District: Sailors, thieves, drifters, guys looking for problems, and of course… prostitutes. Definitely a place you really wouldn’t want to go to at night. Sailors docking in Lisbon for a short leave were invited to bars and discos named after famous ports like “Amsterdam”. Cais do Sodré was once the next amusement park for adults: There were fist fights, cheap booze, night girls, drugs, and violence for all kinds of tastes in some of the decrepit, dark, dirty and narrow streets of Cais do Sodré. For decades it remained so. Old school discos like Tokyo, Rotterdam and bars like Copenhagen or Viking were open until morning. Slowly, things started to change. Tokyo and Jamaica became trendy, Pensão Amor was considered the “Next big thing!”, and some hidden spots like Atelier 29 were recently discovered. Like a freight train, Cais do Sodré was renewed: small cosy places like Sol e Pesca were getting lots of good buzz. And now? Well… Night girls are still there, sometimes drunks, sailors, and of course… the same drunken sailors. The area is crowded with people leaving Bairro Alto as bars close earlier there while here some of them are open until morning! It’s crowded even on weekdays. Everything has changed for the good.
