Medieval Moat, Rhodes Circumscribing the Medieval City from land, the Moat runs along some 2.5 km. Its purpose was to keep enemies and their siege gear off the main fortification system of the walls and bastions. The Rhodian Moat has never been submerged in water; rather, it relied on its considerable depth – considerable enough to have helped surface more ancient vestiges of urban life, such as irrigation ducts, sewers etc. With its bloody past way behind, the Moat in present day plays host to a multitude of activities by people those who come here for sport and exercise or a simple stroll, pet on leash. More often than note, the area is filled with the notes of musical shows and thespian events hosted on selected sites along it.
