There are many cute shops up the hill in West Asheville and a good bar/restaurant scene nearby - Anoche is my favorite! 5-minute walk to New Belgium, Hole Donuts, Grey Eagle, Cooperative Coffee, etc. 10-minute walk to Owl Bakery. 5-minute drive, bus, and Uber downtown or a 30-minute walk.
