Our location is perfect for exploring the mid Devon countryside and beyond. Located in a culturally rich region of Devon, it is just half an hour’s drive away from Dartmoor and is also well located for heading into Exeter or to the stunning Devon coast. The accomodation is our own home, and we enjoy using the space when it is vacant. The space is most of the ground floor of our house, and we feel that while it offers privacy, we are on hand upstairs should we be needed.
Crediton is a small market town just half an hour’s drive away from Dartmoor and also well located for heading into the city of Exeter (20 minutes by car) or to the stunning Devon coast. Artist's Retreat is well situated at the top end of the high street, over looking the Green. The Green is found at the top end of the high street. It can be a busy road at times, but traffic does not move quickly. The bedroom is positioned at the front of the property.
The property has a south facing, secluded garden, perfect for relaxing in on a sunny morning or afternoon. The rooms are centrally heated, cosy and clean, feeling warm even on the coldest Devon evenings. There is also a brand new wood burner.
The living room is furnished with a wooden table, chairs and a sofa. The furniture mostly comes from the local area with oddities such as silver plated candlesticks from a nearby manor house and antique pew chairs from a local church.
The bedroom has a double bed with a comfortable mattress and feather mattress topper. There is a selection of books and a basic record player to enjoy.
Our utility room, which is at your disposal, is equipped with items you might need for cooking a simple meal, as well as essentials such as tea, milk and freshly ground coffee. We dont have a full cooker but a 2 ring stove and toaster are available. A bowl of fresh fruit will be available for you to enjoy throughout your stay and some plenty of breakfast items are provided including bread/butter/milk (you specify which type), juice, porridge oats, yogurt, eggs, baked beans and tomatoes.
The bathroom has a small shower with good water pressure and a plentiful supply of hot water. There is also a hairdryer.
The ground floor rooms in our house were originally a working laundry dating to before the Great Fire of Crediton in 1743. They are ideal to accommodate 2 guests comfortably. Mattresses are available for 2 further guests but we advise that a couple of larger parties have fed back to us that the flat feels a little cramped for more than 2 adults. So please bear this in mind before booking.
Crediton has been a settlement since at least the mid 600s. It is currently undergoing a resurgence with a redeveloped town square which holds a wonderful bi-monthly Saturday farmers’ market, a host of newly-opened independent coffee shops and a great selection of cosy book shops, pubs and restaurants.
There are regular trains to Exeter, Torquay, Barnstaple and Paignton while a bus service runs several times daily to Exeter and Barnstaple.
One of Crediton’s traditional industries was shoe making. Although this is no longer the case, shoes can still be mended at the excellent cobbler situated on the High Street.
Jazz and classical concerts are held throughout the year at various locations including at the parish church (one of the largest in England). International stars occasionally make appearances and it is worth checking out. Throughout the summer months Devon also hosts a number of different festivals, so be it pop music, indie music or classical you are sure to find something which you’ll enjoy. The food festival celebrated its 10th anniversary this June, another popular event.
Sorry, no pets, and smoking in the outdoor spaces only. A large friendly cat and a well behaved greyhound live in the flat above, but the greyhound is never left unattended in the garden when guests are staying.
Crediton is a small, friendly market town in the middle of Devon. The accommodation is found on the main street of Crediton, on the west side of the town next to the green. It experiences some noise from the road in the bedroom, particularly at busy times of day, but the small courtyard garden at the back of the property is very quiet.
