Alberobello is a UNESCO World Heritage site: split into two quarters on two hilltops, there are about 400 trulli dating back to 17th – 18th centuries. In 1481 King of Naples granted the Count of Conversano feudal rights and ownership of a largely uninhabited area of the Trulli Murgia. He named this new territory 'Silva aut Nemus Arboris Belli'. From about 40 families initially, growth was encouraged and an inn, a mill, a public oven and a butcher shop were built in the 17th C. The peasants were poor with no legal rights, and were forced to build dry stone houses which could be easily be dismantled before tax inspections, as then they were only seen as temporary structures (no tax!).
