On a beautiful sun-drenched wooden deck, The Lookout is luring locals with its robust coffee, winning harbour views and seasonal brunch. Part of a larger NSW government project to upgrade the century-old Elizabeth Bay Marina, the new cafe has a super-relaxed vibe and, as a gentle sea breeze drifts off the harbour, a front-row seat to the boats sailing by. After a rigorous tender process involving more than 70 cafe applicants, the green light was given to Andrew Carter, one half of the team behind Summer Hill’s Heritage Coffee Brewers and Bean Drinking in Crows Nest. The result is a cafe reminiscent of a beachside kiosk, but with an open-plan kitchen and spacious outdoor seating. The cafe uses Mecca Coffee and Sample Coffee and, if you’re sitting in, it’s served in mugs courtesy of Melbourne’s Claystone Pottery. The food menu is simple but creative. There’s corn fritters served with whipped avocado, salsa, a herb salad and a perfectly poached egg with a runny yolk. The hotcakes are covered in a piquant raspberry jam and come with a generous slab of yoghurt ganache. Carter blends frozen corn puree into his pancake batter to give it a cornbread feel. “I make food that I want to eat. We try to keep things simple – serving good food in a relaxing environment,” says Carter. Richer and heartier ingredients will be added to his menu as the temperature drops.
